Just a Word

An empty word-and shrouded meaning-

And remorse receding,

Spoken by soulless lips

who, of the heart, sips

At the unattended gash

A lash-yes!-a lash

of that tamed, useless word,

that the guilty have preferred-

And this shattered trust forgot

Upon forgiveness to be bought-

For those slippery lies-

For those uncaring eyes-

Wherever that path might lead

At the very end, a promise to heed-

That oblivious word, never spoken,

A bridge never broken.
